The modern airliner has made remarkable progress over the last century, but the aircraft itself has been a bit of a mystery.

The story of how it was built and designed has been largely forgotten.

This book tells the story of an airplane and the people who built it.

The airplane, the airplane: A Story of Flight by David C. Hirsch, illustrated by Jim J. Dillard, is available from, Barnes & Noble, and Indiebound.

It was co-authored by former National Geographic reporter, John O’Neill, and is a collaboration between The New York Times Book Review, The National Geographic Society, and the American Institute of Architects.

HIRS will also be speaking at the inaugural AAAS Conference on Aviation and Aerospace in New York, May 21-23.
